Awareness Activities
According to Article 2 of Emiri Decree No. 38, 2003, one of the seven objectives of NHRC is to raise awareness and enrich education on Human Rights and Freedoms. NHRC has accordingly adopted an intensive programme of activities that encompasses public lectures, awareness publications and initiating and participating in a number of local, regional and international forums. 

Below is a brief account of the sort of activities NHRC initiated or participated in during fiscal 2006-07:
 
 Public Lectures: In cooperation with the Social Education Department at the Ministry of Education, NHRC organized three public lectures: "The Human Rights Concept-Rights & Freedoms"; "Human Rights in Islamic Sharia and International Law"; and, "What is NHRC?". 

The first lecture was held at Fatima Zahraa Intermediary School for Girls on 16th February 2006, with a repeat performance at Umm Ayman Secondary School for Girls, on 20th February 2006. The second lecture was held at the Ahmad Ibn Henbal Secondary School for Boys, on 16th February 2006 while the third was given at Khalifa Secondary School for Girls on 23rd February 2006. 


NHRC also prepared a Public Audio-visual Presentation on the Mission of Amnesty International as a protector of Human Rights. The presentation was held at Wejba Intermediary School for Girls on 24th May 2006. 

 
NHRC Publications: NHRC has successfully published the first issue of its quarterly Arabic Magazine "Al-Saheefa" which can now be accessed through a flash link on all web pages of the NHRC Arabic internet site. NHRC has also published a number of handouts including pamphlets and booklets covering: "The International Convention on Civil and Political Rights"; "The Medina Document" formulated by prophet Mohammad (PBUH), outlying domestic and foreign policy of the then infant Islamic state being established under his leadership.  

The handouts also included "The Convention against Torture and other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment". They also included, "The Universal Declaration of Human Rights" and "The Annual Report on Human Rights & Activities of the Committee for the year 2005 AD – 1426 AH". 

 
Initiated & Joint Activities: NHRC has meanwhile taken the initiative in organizing a number of local and regional forums and conferences; while at the same time jointly participated in an even greater number of such functions on the regional, Arab and international levels. 

On its own initiative, NHRC organized the second conference for National Human Rights Committees in the Arab World which was held in Doha 4th-6th March 2006; also, "The Arab Civil Society Forum" which was held ahead of the "Doha Civil Society Forum in Support of Democracy" held in the Qatari capital 17th-18th June 2006. NHRC also produced the children's educational lyric play, "Dream Island". 

 
In joint action with the Foreign, Interior and Justice Ministries, on one hand, and other local and regional organizations such as – The Supreme Council for Family Affairs, The Oman Centre for Human Rights and The Ibn Khaldoun Centre for Development Studies in Cairo, on the other, NHRC participated in more than 20 conferences, forums and work shops including:  
  • Freedom of Speech Day Forum, held at Ibn Khaldoun Hall at Qatar University, 3rd May 2006;
  • Work shop on "Rights of the Disabled-Social Discrimination", Alexandria 10th -11th May 2006;
  • The International Forum on Immigrant Workers in the Timber and Construction Industries", Kingdom of Bahrain 17th-18th May 2006;
  • The Preparatory Session for Human Rights Committees in the Arab World & Scandinavian Countries, National Centre for Human Rights, Jordan;
  • The Second Forum for Democracies and Political Reform in the Arab World, Doha,  27th-29th May 2007
